Cailleach's Cunning | Rain Sweetener Working Oil

An oil for breaking up life's storms and sweetening the winds.

Rain Sweetener is a very special and somber elixir. It's made with a hagstone that soaked in rainwater collected from Hurricane Helene for one year.

A hagstone or holey stone is a stone that has a complete hole worn through it by water (in this case, the Atlantic Ocean). It has many folkloric uses due to being a somewhat common find on the shores of the Celtic Isles. It is used as a protective amulet, a revealer of hidden things, a healing tool, and much more. Here, I have worked with a specific tale: sailors would hang the stone from the mast of their ships to break up storms as the wind and waves knocked it about. You can imagine the power, then, of being exposed to both the Atlantic tow and the raging waters of Helene.

As the Wielder of the Winds, Rain Sweetener breaks apart life's storms as they reach you. What looks like a destructive storm ends up a light and nourishing rain. A terrifying tempest slows to a breeze. A deadly bolt of lightning bends. Whatever is thrown your way, intentionally or unintentionally, can be broken apart and turned aside, ensuring a safe voyage to stiller harbors. Your banes can become boons.

However, this oil relies on a special kind of taboo magick to increase its power. After every use, you must let it rest for 4 days. A stone cannot sail your ship for you. You must put forth your own efforts, too. Then let it take care of the rest.

Each Working Oil is made with herbs foraged here in our Appalachian home, steeped in sunflower oil and exposed to a rigorous process of herbal alchemy.

Some ideas for working with Rain Sweetener:

• Anoint candles to burn during major life changes, especially difficult or unexpected ones.
• Add several drops to equal parts water and alcohol in a spray bottle to make an enchanting mist. Spray yourself as needed (but remember the 4-day rule!).
• Carry the vial with you as a talisman. It can work its magick passively!
• Anoint the outside of a cup and drink water from it, imagining that you are draining the storm's power away and turning it into nourishment.
